Abstract:

Too much steel in concrete structures? - Reinforced concrete - 120 years worldwide success on the basis of an incorrect approach

The reinforced concrete research and standardization are based on the structural analysis of truss models. Thus, the special properties of the building material concrete are not taken into account and no adequate approach is found. Improperly performed main reinforcement causes tensile stresses, whereby additional reinforcement (stirrups) has to be included. At various structural elements is shown how much more cost effective and environmentally friendly buildings can be created by means of the reinforcement oriented to the tension trajectories.
