Abstract: |
A notable increase of rail traffic is expected in Switzerland in the next few decades. In order to cope with this increase, the main station in Zurich is being improved with a new underground through station - the Löwenstraße station. This will be connected to the existing Swiss Railways network through the new Weinberg Tunnel. With the opening of the new Cross Rail in 2014, Zurich will become more attractive as a business location, and the journey times for long-distance connections will be massively improved. The investment cost of this project is about 2.031 billion CHF (price basis 2005). This article gives an overview of the overall project and then describes the Weinberg Tunnel and the loose ground section in detail. |
