The rules in DIN EN 1993-1-1 for the bearing capacity of cross sections are commented with regard to practical applications and the common verifications used in Germany. Ambiguities are eliminated as far as possible and guidance for the application of the necessary verifications are given. Due to the fact that the interaction conditions in DIN EN 1993-1-1 are partly on the unsafe side (more than 10 %), alternative verification are recommended.
