Abstract:

Small strain stiffness in context of hypoplasticity

It can be observed in laboratory tests, that the soil stiffness at small strains is much higher and less stress-dependent than at high strains. This paper demonstrates how the small-strain stiffness can be calculated from the hypoplastic model with intergranular strains. Equations for the stiffness at small and large strains are presented. Subsequently it is explained how the hypoplastic parameters for the range of small strains can be calculated from the hypoplastic parameters determined at large strains. In this way it is possible to simulate realistically the soil behaviour due to dynamic loading up to a shear strain amplitude of &ggr; &equals: 5·10-4.
