Abstract:

The influence of gusset plates on the bearing behaviour of truss members in compression.

Web members of trusses may be connected to the top or bottom chord by gusset plates, which might lead to a reduction of their buckling resistance. This is due to the smaller stiffness of the gusset plate in comparison to the member. A design of the plate based on the strength of the material only is not sufficient in these cases since the stability must be checked too.
In this paper the effects of various parameters are presented. Furthermore it is shown how web members and gusset plates should be modelled to obtain reasonable results. Design aides are given to help determining an appropriate stiffness.
