Abstract:

Non-destructive imaging of reinforcement bars in circular concrete columns using radar technique

In recent years, non-destructive testing methods (NDT) have been proven as useful tools to evaluate road and building constructions. One of those methods, ground penetrating radar (GPR), becomes increasingly popular for investigating reinforced concrete structures, especially for detection of reinforcement bars and tendon ducts, where most of these applications take place on flat surfaces.
This study focuses on the use of GPR on curved surfaces of reinforced concrete columns which are widely used in large-scale civil infrastructures. The locations of steel reinforcement in concrete were determined in circular concrete columns in both laboratory and field tests. With appropriate high-frequency radar antennas, experimental design and special migration algorithm GPR can be applied directly to detect reinforcement bars in curved concrete columns.
