Abstract: |
Wind tunnel investigations for calculational proofs beyond standardization using the example of bell tower vibrations. From the literature and numerous wind tunnel experiments it is known that not only for high rise buildings, but also for church towers the approaches of the established codes overestimate considerably the resulting wind loads. According to the codes constant pressure distributions on the windward and the leeward side are assumed which lead in comparison to the real distribution of the pressures around the tower to significantly too large wind force coefficients. For Luxembourg for example the additional difficulty arises that no national code for wind loads exists and that the work on a national appendix for the Eurocode 1 part 4 [1] has only just begun. In this article it is therefore explained how the relevant input data for the calculation of the wind loads can be determined more precisely by statistical analyses and wind tunnel measurements for the individual case. With this approach it is possible to make use of existing resources for the proof of the structural safety. A case study illustrates this procedure. |
