Abstract:

This paper describes the theoretical and practical investigations into the reasons for the vibrations that were recorded after the completion of the Werkspoorbridge in The Netherlands. Based on in-situ tests, a theoretical model is developed to predict the phenomenon. Furthermore, measures taken to avoid the vibrations are described. Dampers were installed on each of the vibrating diagonals both in the longitudinal and transversal direction. Finally, the paper analyses where the current design codes, e.g. Eurocode, seem to fail to predict the phenomenon in an adequate way.
