Abstract:

Bonding of hardwoods with 1C PUR adhesives for timber construction.

Based on the increasing supply of hardwoods and their excellent mechanical properties, the use for glulam seems to be an interesting application. However, difficulties in bonding become evident during water resistance tests of bonded joints. The intention of this paper is to examine the combination capability of one-component polyurethane (1C PUR) adhesives with hardwoods for glued laminated timber under different moisture conditions. To evaluate the performance of bondings with ash, beech, and oak, tensile shear strength tests (DIN EN 302-1) were conducted at standard atmosphere and compression shear strength tests (ASTM D 2559) were performed at standard atmosphere or boiling water conditions, respectively. The adhesives tested were 1C PUR with a stepwise varied modulus of elasticity, phenol-resorcinol-resin (PRF), and solid wood for comparison. In dry state the requirements of the used standards were fulfilled by both types of adhesive sufficiently. The wet condition lead in general to drastically reduced values in shear strength, however, the strength of wood decreased as well with increasing wood moisture content. In case of the PRF bonds, the requirements of the compression shear strength were only fulfilled with oak. However the wood failure percentage reached the minimum requirements of the standard in the case of all tested wood species. With the modified 1C PUR adhesives, a large decrease in strength was found, independent of their individual stiffness. The wood failure percentage was also drastically reduced, and therefore the minimum requirements of the standard could not be equalled.
