Abstract:

Simplified Method to exploit the plastic buckling resistance by introducing an "effectivep plate thickness".

The verification of buckling resistance according to the effectivep width method given in EC3 part 1-5 (section 4) is marked by a time consuming and complex calculation process. Moreover, for fatigue affected structures, such as bridges, the applicability is restricted. Within this paper, a simplified procedure is introduced which extends the linear approach of reduced stresses (EC3-1-5, section 10) by introducing an effective thickness. Thus, the plastic resistance of the resulting cross section can be exploited similar to the first approach, but at lower computational time.
