Composite beams with small-scale pin connectors - Experimental investigations and finite element simulation. The development of a novel welding process with systematic wire-feed and pullback allows for the automatic assembly of ball-headed pin shear connectors with a cone-shaped base on structural steels. By means of this process and the combination with high-strength fine-grained concrete very filigree composite sections of high specific load carrying capacities can be produced, opening new fields for structural application. However, the force-deflection behavior of the shear connection with the novel small-scale pins is not clarified yet. In contrast to ordinary composite beams with headed stud shear connection, the specific ratios of concrete and steel composite sections as well as new scenarios of bearing loads and span widths cause different requirements regarding the ductility of the pin connection, in order to achieve maximum load carrying capacities of cross section and system. In this paper, the load-bearing and deformation behavior of composite connections with small-scale pin-connectors is investigated based on four composite beam experiments with different spans and degrees of partial shear connection. Furthermore, a finite element model for steel concrete composite beams with pin connectors is developed. The non-linear finite element simulations are used to clarify the distribution of shear forces in the pin connectors, to illustrate the rearrangements of internal forces in the composite connection to analyze the global load bearing and deformation behavior of these innovative small-scale shear connectors. |
