Abstract: |
The arrival of the ADECO-RS approach in the field of tunnelling made a substantial contribution to the process of industrialising conventional excavation. In this paper, the author illustrates the main issues addressed in the design for the construction of four different tunnels along the new Val Fortore State Road 212 with special regard to face reinforcement and forepoling. The tunnel excavation mainly passes through the clay-marl and calcareous-marl flysches of the Lagonegresi Unit (Flysch Rosso) with a shallow overburden (< 15 m), a geological formation particularly suitable for face reinforcement using fibre glass structural elements. A serious face collapse occurred during excavation of the Cerzone Tunnel in September 2008, causing a crater to open at the surface. Works were suspended and a new design for tunnel advance was drawn up according to the ADECO-RS approach with a substantial review of face reinforcement dimensioning. The new project enabled excavation to resume without difficulty and with limited deformation. |
