Abstract:

Investigations on the influence of the adhesive type on the capillary water transport in wood parallel to the fibre direction.

The capillary water transport in fibre direction in spruce wood was determined by means of neutron imaging on solid wood samples and samples with one glue line. In the case of EPI and 1C-PUR a conspicuous moisture accumulation occurred in front of the glue line. This behaviour did not appear with bone glue, PVAc, UF and MUF. The results are conform with investigations of the diffusion resistance made on adhesive films and glued wood with the same adhesive types. The presented work will be the basis of planned Finite Element-simulations of the moisture transport in glued wood elements and will help to prevent structural damage.
