Abstract:

The roofing structure of the small courtyard of the Dresden Royal Palace.

Roofing the small courtyard of the Dresden Residence Castle, a foyer of the complex of museums comprising of various exhibitions has been created as its centerpiece. A strongly arched lattice shell preserves the existing buildings and fulfills the special architectural requirements in a very sensitive environment. By using ETFE-foil air panels and providing their air supply through the primary structure, a very light weight per area was achieved and a sophisticated bearing system minimized the load on the partially more than 500 year old walls of the castle.
