Abstract:

Structural performance of cold formed rectangular structural hollow sections.

Structural hollow sections can be either cold formed or hot finished. The manufacturing methods of these two products are different and consequently the technical characteristics also vary. The applicability, weldability and reliability of cold formed hollow sections are sometimes questioned because of the consequences of cold forming and inhomogenous cross sections. In order to enable a technically and economically purposeful product selection, various influences of the manufacturing process on the quality and structural performance of the hollow sections are specifically described. It is established that properly manufactured cold formed structural hollow sections according to DIN EN 10219 and the State of the Art fulfil the requirements of Eurocode 3 for static strength and durability just as reliably as hot finished hollow sections according to DIN EN 10210. Cold formed hollow sections offer an economical and reliable structural product for a wide range of applications.
