Abstract:

According to German standards DIN 1053–1 and Eurocode 6, the design strength of axially loaded masonry structures is calculated on the basis of the strength of brick and mortar. These standards cover masonry made of mainly homogeneous components. Further to the bearing strength of historical buildings of which both bricks and mortar often show a large scatter in strength und deformation capacities, material concepts and failure criteria are proposed that are integrated into an analytical model. A formula is proposed to calculate the bearing capacity of masonry as a function of the scatter of the brick and mortar properties.
