Abstract:

Carrying capacity of unreinforced shear walls according to DIN EN 1996-1-1/NA.

This paper deals with the carrying capacity of shear walls subjected to in-plane loading according to the design regulations of European Standard DIN EN 1996-1-1 and German national Annex [1]. A new approach to determine the load effects more realistically is described. Furthermore, by using a dimensionless notation a full set of design equations is presented, which allows for the calculation and comparison of the in-plane resistance of unreinforced masonry walls in an easy and understandable manner. An extensive parameter study with common stone-mortar-combinations was carried out in order to identify the distinctive failure modes and to derive significant simplifications in practical design.
