Abstract:

Firstly, the results of analysis of the load behaviour of slender wind loaded cylindrical shells are presented. Although these structures have a beam-like geometry they don't behave like beams. Special attention is turned on the transfer of the structural mechanic results into the design practice. This is stated on the example of the shell which is ring stiffened at the top. The several possibilities of bucking strength varification given by the Eurocode are compared. Stress design and design by numerical analysis with different accuracy of moddling. It is concluded how far the particular design possibilities are suitable to cover the analyzed problem, which isn't one of the basic buckling cases. Finally, conclusions for standarization are presented.
