Abstract:

A review of the Collaborative Reporting for Safer Structures (CROSS) website (www.cross-safety.org) shows that there have been numerous incidents involving the collapse of cantilever structures. This article, prepared on behalf of the IStructE Design Practice and Regulatory Control Committee, focuses mainly on canopies and balconies. It aims to identify gaps in Eurocode and IStructE guidance, and make recommendations on additional considerations that engineers should take into account when designing or assessing cantilever structures.
