Abstract:

Structures designed for the storage of hazardous products must meet strength, stiffness, durability and tightness requirements. However, assessing the safety of a storage system as a whole involves more than just conformity with codes. Analysis of why and how a system might fail, and the potential consequences of a catastrophic failure, should belong to the safety assessment process. In this paper, some aspects of low probability/high consequence risks are considered. The role of robust passive safety components is also considered, and an example illustrates the integrated criteria approach.
