The paper deals with the problems encountered when assessing the reliability of existing structures in a rather educational manner, addressing structural engineers not familiar with reliability concepts. Its aim is to exemplify the main stream of reasoning in this field and the methods available. The paper was discussed and approved for publication by the Working Party of the Joint Committee on Structural Safety (JCSS). |
