Abstract:

This paper presents the development and application of slim floor construction in Sweden and Finland. Slim floors are most commonly used in multi-storey office buildings. Since the depth of the floor beam determines the total depth of the floor, beams have been a primary area of research and development for slim floor systems. Composite action between the steel beams and the floor slabs is generally not considered in design. Compared with bare steel beams, composite beams have advantages of improved strength, stiffness and fire resistance. Their potential for innovative design and construction can be further developed.
