Abstract:

Synopsis

The Paper gives the results of an investigation into the approach embankments to a new road bridge. The investigation which commenced in May 1951, was undertaken in order to study the settlement due to the compression of the underlying soil.

The site is at Lackford, West Suffolk, on the Bury St Edmunds–Mildenhall Road (A.11O1). Although the embankments are only about 4 ft high, the underlying soil contains strata of highly compressible material; therefore, it was anticipated that appreciable settlement would occur.

Before the embankments were constructed three gauges were installed to record the movements at the site. The compressibility of the underlying soil was determined by laboratory consolidation tests, and the results of those tests were used to calculate the ultimate settlement likely to occur. The observations, obtained at the site up to July 1955, showed that about 9 in. of settlement occurred, a figure which agreed very well with the value calculated from the results of the laboratory tests.
