Abstract:

With the advancements in structural engineering, seismic performance of buildings can be adjudged on the basis of performance-based techniques. This paper presents the performance based seismic evaluation of buildings with podiums for varying ratios of tower area to podium area. The structural system of the building consists of shear walls and moment resisting frames. Buildings with podiums have been designed and analysed with and without connection between the tower portion and the podium portion for Seismic Zone IV, by carrying out response spectrum analysis as per IS 1893-2016. The structural responses have been compared in terms of diaphragm forces, base shear, time period, storey stiffness, storey shear, storey displacement etc. for the variations in number of podiums i.e., single, double & three podium levels. Performance-based seismic evaluation of the buildings has been carried out with podium and tower as a connected unit with varying ratios of 0.35, 0.45, and 0.55 of tower area to podium area i.e., by keeping the tower area constant and increasing the podium extents. Pushover analysis is carried out and comparison is done for the influence of podium on the non-linear behaviour of the structures.
