Abstract: Construction work was the responsibility of two “masters of works”: a mason and a carpenter. They were responsible for varying constituencies: a viscounty or bailiwick for the king’s masters of works - a city, or even a single building fot the others. They organized the sites from the decision to start the work until its completion. Consulted as experts, frequently leaders in business, they intervened for other sponsors. Their prestige declined by the turn of the sixteenth century.
