Abstract: A review is done of the state of the art of the Portland cement-blast furnace slag cementing system emphasizing mechanical compressive strength in hardened concrete. Blast-furnace slag can be effectively used as a replacement for Portland cement and can improve compressive strength, resistance to steel reinforcement corrosion and concrete carbonation, and result in smaller pore size and an optimum hydration process. The extent to which these characteristics are improved depends on replacement level and exposure environment. Replacement levels as high as 70% can be used in humid microclimates or marine environments, while levels as high as 50% are appropriate where carbonation risk is high. Replacement efficiencies greater than one for compressive strength can be attained within these value ranges.

Keywords:slag; carbonation; industrial byproduct; and corrosion.
