Abstract: |
The reconstruction of the bridge spanning the Saimen Canal in Vyborg was part of the Bridge Rehabilitation Project of Russia, financed through loans from the World Bank. The bridge is situated on Federal Highway M10, which connects Russia and Finland and other Scandinavian countries. This section of highway has very high levels of traffic. After 36 years of use, the bridge condition had become unsatisfactory, and in 1996, the bridge was included in a pilot scheme for the Bridge Rehabilitation Project. The realisation of an alternative solution, i.e. to build a new composite-girder superstructure instead of repairing the existing concrete superstructures, enabled the reconstruction to take place in a short time without exceeding the contract price. |
