Abstract:

Shear Strength of Structural Concrete Beams

Even after many years of in-depth research, the determination of shear strength of structural concrete beams is still in discussion. The reasons for that are, on the one hand, the complexity of the problem and, on the other hand, further developments of structural systems and building materials as well as new questions arising from the evaluation of existing structures. In this contribution a structured procedure including design, detailed analysis and elaborate assessment of structural concrete members subjected to shear is presented. The focus is on the Generalized Stress Field Approach which particularly enables a profound analysis and a general evaluation of a structure. The corresponding definitions are well supported by experimental results and arranged to be easily used in practical application. Shear strengths calculated on the basis of this method are compared to results according to DIN 1045-1 and Eurocode 2. It shows that a re-evaluation of the code provisions is well appropriate. Basically, this contribution may be regarded as a contribution to the discussion about the development of national and international codes.
