Abstract:

The resund Link between Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmö, Sweden, is one of the largest civil engineering projects in the world in this decade. Near Copenhagen Airport, construction on the resund approach has been underway since 1993. The Approach extends from the center of Copenhagen to the airport and will include construction of an 18 km railway and a 9 km motorway through densely populated areas. Along this route some 1,000 workers will be active until the end of 1998, when the Approach will be completed. From a technical point of view, the land works of the resund Link are not unique; what is remarkable, however, is the management system that has been devised to assure the project's success in terms of quality, environmental responsibility and public acceptance. Public acceptance of large infrastructure projects, especially in developed countries, increasingly depends on the project's environmental impact, both during and after construction.
