Abstract:

The basic physical principles underlying active noise control are discussed from a physical viewpoint with a view to understanding the issues which must be addressed in a practical implementation of the technology. Applications which should be feasible are identified and applications which are impractical for physical acoustics reasons are also identified. Finally, current and future research directions are explored and their relevance to commercial application of the technology discussed.
