Pedestrian bridges stayed with prestressing barsIn this paper, the advantages and limitations of prestressing strands and bars for stays in pedestrian bridges are discussed based on geometrical, mechanical and aesthetical criteria. Three pedestrian bridges stayed with prestressing bars, recently built near Barcelona, are presented, which have resulted of interest for their aesthetics and high performance/cost ratio. The bridge built in Esplugues de Llobregat has a total length of 72 m, a single mast placed at 50 m and 22 m of the abutments and three stays placed in a single central plane, The second pedestrian bridge, built in Martorell over the Highway CN-II has a total length of 80 m, a single mast with 4 stays equally separated and two backstays. The third one, built over the A-19 freeway in Badalona, is composed by two steel arches of 56 m span, with 8 stainless steel bars supporting an intermediate deck being at the same time the arch tie |
