Abstract: |
Palacio de Comunicaciones ‐ a glass roof for the new town hall of Madrid The city of Madrid moved its town hall into the completely renovated “Palacio de Comunicaciones” in 2011. A part of this renovation was the covering of the courtyard with a lightweight glass roof to improve its usability. The structure is a single layer grid shell with a surface area of about 3000 m² and a main span of approx. 45 m which makes it to one of the widest spanning single layer glass grid shells. The bars that form the triangular grid shell are connected by bolted nodes. Two bolt layers assure sufficient bending resistance and lead to speedy erection without the need for prestressing. State‐of‐the‐art CNC techniques for preparing the nodes and bars allowed to achieve the precision needed for such a slender single‐layer grid shell. |
