Abstract:

Low emitting functional coatings on membranes for improving energy efficiency

For improving the thermal insulation of membrane structures as well as for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings using membranes, ZAE Bayern developed a low emitting (low-e) coating on membranes together with Verseidag-Indutex GmbH. These coatings contain IR-active pigments which partially reflect infrared radiation and therefore provoke the "low-e effect". By choosing suitable pigments and by practically dispersing the pigments a thermal emittance between 0.1 and 0.3 was achieved. Beyond that it is possible to add color pigments to the coating in order to combine the "low-e effect" with a customized color impression. By reducing the emission of thermal radiation from the membrane surface it is possible to significantly enhance the thermal insulation of a single or a multi-layered membrane system. The developed membranes were firstly integrated in a building where the effect of the low-e coating was demonstrated by an IR-camera.
