Abstract:

Simplified Method of Considering Concrete Creep for Checking Lateral Instability of Reinforced Concrete Beams

The most well-known and established calculation methods for checking lateral instability don't consider satisfyingly the time-dependent effects of concrete creep and shrinkage. The current design code [1] specifies a default value of geometric imperfections for calculating lateral instability using 2nd order theory. The proceeding suggested in this paper considers the long-term behavior of concrete at lateral instability by changing the geometric imperfections specified in the code. The proposed approximation method to consider concrete creep can be applied easily and can be used with nearly each calculation method for checking lateral instability. The method itself has not to be changed for this purpose. As shown by examples, the proposed proceeding produces plausible results.
