Abstract:

A simplified method to evaluate the global seismic damage index for reinfoced concrete buildings

A method to asses the seismic damage in reinforced concrete framed structures using response spectra is proposed. The method is based on the shear beam and on the bending bearn models, for which the first vibration mode is considered to calculate the lateral displacement at the top of the building, as well as on the strength capacity curve of the structure. This curve relates the base shear with the maximum lateral displacement of the structure and is obtained applying monotonically increasing static loads. until the structural collapse is reached. The method provides the following results: the elements which suffer a non-linear behaviour, the maximum expected lateral displacement of the structure, the vibration period after the structure suffers a certain damagle and, the most important. the global damage index of the structure. normalized between zero and one. The validation of the proposed is performed by calculating the seismic damage of several structures subjected to the Corralito, 1959 and to the Tokachi Oki. 1968. earthquakes, for different normalizations of the maximum ground acceleration. These results are compared with those Obtained by using a dynamic non-linear structural analysis. The obtained global damage index is also compared with that of Park and Ang.
