Abstract:

A lift bridge built in 1926 over the U.S. Canal at Kaukauna, Wis. was replaced by a sleek new lift bridge whose sculptured shape encloses all the machinery within welded steel box sections. This eliminated the potential for trapped water that can cause corrosion pockets. The lift span consists of single section welded plate girders, and weighs a total of 481,000 lbs. Counterweights are heavy concrete enclosed in steel boxes. The two-lane bridge cost $3,324,000.
