Abstract:

Overhead line tower for the turnaround in energy policy - architectural, technical and economic aspects.

In Germany, overhead line towers in steel are traditionally constructed as lattice towers still using simple construction steel materials, angle profiles, bolted joints or even rivet connections. Lattice towers represent technical progress and national affluence for a long time, but this view has changed completely. Currently, overhead line towers are condemned with regard to aesthetic and the impact on man and environment. The German turnaround in energy policy is already accompanied by strong public protests. On the other hand, most German steel manufacturer are no more specialized in planning and building lattice tower constructions. In the course of the energy turnaround it is therefore essential to change the recent negative image of overhead line towers into an accepted and urgently required part of a modern industrial society. Moreover, the potential of modern steel and sophisticated steel constructions should be introduced into the construction of overhead line towers. This will only be successful, is the design and construction of overhead line tower in steel includes modern steel production, manufacturing and erecting technologies combined with economy and architectural requirements. Consequently, steel engineers and architects will cooperate in this interdisciplinary research project. The research target is to develop a new steel construction of overhead line towers, which achieves highest technical, economic and aesthetic quality and thus, will support as well as symbolize the change in energy policy in Germany.
