Abstract:

The reliability of reinforced concrete columns is evaluated by application of the Monte Carlo simulation techniques in order to quantify the probability of exceeding the ultimate limit state of buckling. The mechanical model takes into account second order effects and material non-linearity. The probability of failure gives an estimation of design safety and allows sensitivity to such changes in the deterministic parameters as the steel ratio, slenderness, connection types, and in distributions of the random variables, such as geometrical dimensions, mechanical properties of materials and load parameters.
