Abstract:

The article describes current examples of the application of automatic surveying and alarm systems, with a closer description of the systems installed in the Mitterpichling West investigation tunnel for the Koralm Tunnel, the Tyne Tunnel project and in the metro projects in Budapest, Athens und Thessaloniki. The contribution such systems could make to improve the safety and costeffectiveness of tunnel drives is looked into in general. Finally, two visionary research projects are presented.
