Abstract:

Old masonry under seismic loads — Comparison of normative guidelines and measured results.

Building with masonry is based on experiences of many centuries. Although, this design is used worldwide, knowledge about the material behaviour of masonry is still afflicted with uncertainties.
The determination of the safety of these structures against earthquakes is a complex challenge. For instance, it depends on the resistance of the structure, the seismic action and on many of uncertain structural details. Therefore the seismic impact itself and the behaviour of masonry under seismic loads are of high inter est. Especially in earthquake prone regions a realistic assess ment of existing buildings may be achieved by having knowledge regarding material behaviour. If needed, constructively and economically optimized retrofit and strengthening methods can be applied.
