Abstract: |
Interaction of form and structural behaviour of hyperboloid lattice towers. The renown Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov invented and patented in 1896 the hyperboloid lattice tower. In the following four decades he built about 200 towers with his new system. Most of them served as water towers, others were built as lighthouses or radio stations. Form and structure of these towers varies depending on their location and purpose. The geometry of hyperboloid lattice towers is based on five key parameters. The authors undertook an extensive parameter study to explore the interdependencies between the key parameters and their effect on the ultimate bearing load of the structure. Apart from the lattice configuration that was employed by Shukhov, two alternative options are discussed. |
