Abstract:

The telescope in the Alps

During 2007/2008 an extraordinary building structure was erected which serves as a museum in the German Alps. A building supported on only one column being 34 meters long and cantilevers 7 meters from the edge of the mountain top. This construction enables the visitor to overlook freely the town and landscapes of Mittenwald 1300 meters beneath. This paper describes the conception, the planning of structural framework and the construction itself concerning a building in an unusual environment and under exceptional weather and working conditions.
