Abstract:

The "Eurocode 2" in the constext of the Spanish and European standards

Eurocodes are voluntary technical specifications for planning and execution of building and civil engineering structures. Eurocodes preparation begun as an idea in 1976, upon an iniciative of the Commission of the European Communities. In 1990 the studies on Eurocodes were transferred to the European Commitee of Standarization (CEN). Thus, in the future the Eurocodes will be considered as the European standards. Insofar as the mandates of normalization with respect to the Eurocodes are carried out in the frame of the Directive 89/106/EEC (construction products), they will have the nature of harmonized European standards. The elaboration of the Eurocodes within the CEN is fulfilled through a special process under the guidance of the Member States and the Commission of the European Communities itself. The Eurocode-2 refers to concrete structures. The Eurocodes will contribute to improve conditions of competition in matter of public contract works, and to the free movement of construction products. As for the application of Eurocodes in every national territory, and referring to the coeficients of correction, pondering and security of actions, materials and other factors, the definitrion of the values is reserved to the Member States. In the future, Eurocode 2 will probabbly be an alternating recognized but not compulsory procedure in the frame of the "Instrucción Española del Hormigón (EH)" (Spanish Regulation for Concrete).
