Abstract: |
Load bearing capacity of concrete columns with corroded reinforcementConcrete structures decay with time due to different mechanisms and urgent measures are required to decide when and how to repair them. Some tools have been developed in the Brite-Euram project BE-4062 to estimate the effects of reinforcement corrosion, freeze-thaw and alkali silica reaction on the structural performance of concrete structures. In this paper, it is summarized the results of the research carried out in this project with corroded columns. It is concluded that the load bearing capacity of corroded columns can be estimated by means of the conventional models, which are applied to sound elements, with some modifications: a) reduced cross sectional area of both concrete and steel; b) additional eccentricity due to the asymmetric deterioration of the concrete cross section; and c) reduction of design stress in the reinforcement due to a possible premature buckling. |
