Abstract:

Retrofitting of masonry arch structures under high loads.

For the analysis of masonry arch structures made of natural stone, a comprehensive knowledge of the existing structure is required. It needs a structured cooperation between all scientific disciplines that deal with the exploration and evaluation of natural stone buildings. The graphic methods developed in the 19th Century, are helpful. The results will serve as input for electronically supported models and their validation. Because of the potential kinematics of masonry arch structures, the collapse load can only be determined non-linear, which means without superposition of the load case results. If a stabilisation of a masonry arch structure is inevitable, a more rigid superstructure should be considered. It should be avoided to reinforce the arch structure with a skin of ferroconcrete.
