Abstract:

Strengthening of Sylvenstein Reservoir - Design and construction of diaphragm wall and leakage control system

The river Isar is retained at Sylvenstein by an earth fill dam which is 44 m high and founded on deep alluvial ground. After 50 years of exposure to regular impounding and floods the dam and underground are strengthened by a 70 m deep diaphragm wall and a new leakage control system. For the first time an earth fill dam has been tunneled under conditions of pounding for building a gallery. The serviceability of the diaphragm wall is controlled by a row of 54 drainage piles used as monitoring wells.
