Abstract:

Renewal of the Rhine-Port Bendorf - Modernization of an over 100-year old inland port

In December the construction work for the renewal of the handling quays in the Rhine-Port Bendorf started. The 80 - 110 years old bank walls will be replaced by a steel sheet piling with a length of 430 m. Also two berths for tankers will be extended by further mooring dolphins and equipped with additional gangways. A 65000 m² area of the harbour floor will be deepened and thus adapted to the improvement of the Middle Rhine. A new flood-proof storage and handling area of about 12000 m² will be created by means of landfills up to 4 m height. These new areas will get a surface with interlocking paving stones and a new drainage system including a rain detention and settling basin. The total work has to be carried out during full harbour operation. Meanwhile the first construction phase of the new sheet piling including the flood-proof area and the extension of the berths are finished, by the end of June 2012 the total work will be completed. Upon completion the Rhine-Port Bendorf will be a modern and efficient inland harbour with clearly improved conditions for the ship's crews and the handling companies.
