Abstract: |
In the planning phase of a tunnel project, site investigations are carried out, geotechnical data is collected and analyses produced. A favourable and practical tunnel alignment is determined and the geological units to be bored through are described, classified and the risks for tunnelling are estimated. Nonetheless, the ground passed through will always have surprises in store, in mechanised as in conventional tunnelling, in hard rock and in loose ground. Rock type, hardness and strength, degree of jointing, occurrence and formation of fault zones and karst features, formation water ingress etc. can all deviate from the forecast information. |
