Abstract:

By 2010, Eurocodes will replace the current British Standards as the primary basis for civil engineering design in the UK. With the introduction of Eurocode 7 Geotechnical design, a very substantial gap in the coverage of the Eurocodes in underground structures including tunnels has now been closed. This paper describes the design of soft ground tunnels using the Eurocodes, reviews some key aspects of these codes in tunnel design and highlight the discussion with examples of recent design cases.
