Abstract:

The number and diversity of materials in use in structures is increasing. This presents opportunities for engineers, but also poses challenges in how to continue to provide technical advice over such a wide range of materials. This article offers a personal perspective on the issue, discussing current and future ways in which engineers will interact with materials, what some of the materials challenges are, and what futures roles there may be for structural engineers in relation to these materials.
